Gus Dean; GREE Racing set to attack in ARCA’s return to Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. – Looking to shake the bad luck off their back, Gus Dean (@GusDean) and his Win-Tron Racing head to Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway looking for their second top-10 finish of the season in Thursday night’s General Tire 150.

While a strong performance in Sunday’s Menards 200 was thwarted approaching the halfway mark at Toledo Speedway, Dean and his Jamie Jones-led team are encouraged with the speed of their No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolets and look to continue to showcase that in ARCA’s return to Charlotte after a 14-year hiatus.

“Send me in coach,” Dean joked when referring to Charlotte. “I’m ready. Been ready since Sunday. We’ve had some really good No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolets but haven’t been able to produce the results we know we’re capable of.

“At the end of the day, that’s going to make us a better team in the long run. We know we were encouraged by our recent performance at the Charlotte test and hope to grow on that during practice, qualifying and the race on Thursday.”

With the addition of Jones, Dean says his confidence is at an all-time high despite posting just one top-10 finish in the opening five races of the season. Still, Dean knows that he had a car capable of winning in every race.

“There hasn’t been a race this year, where I didn’t feel give the right circumstances we couldn’t have won,” he added. “Jamie and the guys have been working their guts out to make sure our Chevrolets are good. More than good. Fast. There is no quit and something like Toledo just gives us more motivation to come to the track and bounce back.”

Charlotte will be just one of a few new tracks for the Bluffton, S.C. native this season and if he lets his freshman record speak for itself, new tracks for the Win-Tron Racing spoke volume when it came down to performance in his rookie season.

“There were several tracks last year where I had minimal to no track experience and we really threw ourselves into the spotlight,” added Dean. “I’m hoping for more of the same at Charlotte on Thursday night. It’s a huge race for ARCA, General Tire and ourselves. We’ll have guests there from GREE Racing, Tradewinds and Baker Distributing, so we want to go out there and be competitive and back up what we did in the test.”

Speaking of the Charlotte test, Dean found himself inside the top-10 in the speed charts after the six-hour testing session. The 23-year-old says he and Jones found something late in the session but ran out of time to complete the task to its perfection.

“We really do have a good baseline for practice on Thursday,” noted Dean. “The test went pretty good. Charlotte was intimidating at first, but as the test session went on – the changes worked, and we got better. A top-10 finish is what we need on Thursday night to point our ship back in the right direction.”

Win-Tron Racing owner Kevin Cywinski says the combo of Dean and Jones has quickly shown its potential and once the bad luck is behind them, their strength should only intensify.

“I was surprised how quick both Gus and Jamie were able to let the bad luck from Toledo roll of their back,” Cywinski said. “While both were disappointed in the hardship, they along with everyone else on this Win-Tron Racing team is extremely confident in the speed of our race cars.

“I expect that speed to continue this week at Charlotte. I felt for Gus’s first time there, he did an amazing job and I think he’ll get more comfortable throughout the day on Thursday. It’s going to be a tough race, one of the toughest of the year, but I think we’ll show that our No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet is capable of being put in Victory Lane sooner rather than later.”

In 32 career ARCA Racing Series starts, Dean captured his first career victory in his second ever start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway after starting a career-best second in Apr. 2016. Overall, Dean has eight top-five and 18 top-10 finishes.

The General Tire 150 (100 laps | 150 miles) is the sixth of 20 races on the 2018 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Thurs., May 24 with a two-hour practice session from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Timed qualifying is set for later in the day at 5:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag later in the day shortly after 9:00 p.m. The event will be televised live on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities. Strong effort for Gus Dean; GREE Racing thwarted in Toledo

Quick Recap: Even after qualifying was rained out Saturday afternoon at Toledo Speedway, Gus Dean (@gusdean) and his Jamie Jones led Win-Tron Racing team knew their No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet was capable of contending for the win in Sunday’s Menards 200 at Toledo Speedway.

Unfortunately, a mid-race accident cut the team’s bid short in the fifth ARCA Racing Series race of the season.

Starting the 200-lap race eighth based on their practice speed from Saturday morning, Dean hovered just outside the top-five throughout much of the race’s first quarter.

A pit stop for two tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment jumped the Bluffton, S.C.-native to sixth on the grid and eyeing a presence inside the top-five approaching halfway.

Following in the tracks of MDM Motorsports teammates Sheldon Creed and Harrison Burton, the two cars made contact with Dean taking action to avoid the tangling race cars. Dean’s Chevrolet, however, made contact with the outside backstretch wall trying to refrain from connecting with Creed and Burton.

Dean’s No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet suffered the worst damage in the incident sending his GREE Racing team to the garage for the remainder of the race.

The team was credited with a 20th place finish in Dean’s third start at the Northern Ohio race track.

Before the incident, Dean’s Chevrolet was clocked as one of the fastest cars on the track for multiple laps. The continued speed continues to give the Mooresville, N.C.-based team the confidence that their finish was not an indicator of their performance in the third short track race of 2018.

Gus Dean Quote: “Just can’t shake this bad luck. I’m like heartbroken again.

“Our No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet really came to life the longer that we ran. The car would really do anything I wanted to do and that was encouraging.

“Honestly, I was just riding and just minding my manners when Harrison and Sheldon got together, and I tried to avoid them and just became a victim of circumstances.

“It’s frustrating because Jamie (Jones, crew chief), Kevin (Cywinski, co-owner) and all the guys are giving me the tools I need to contend for wins, we just can’t shake this bad luck.

“We’re fighters though. We’re not going to give up.

“Ever.

“I believe in this team and what we’ve built and the support from GREE, Tradewinds Climate Systems and Baker Distributing is enough to put this race behind us and focus ahead next week on Charlotte.

“When our luck turns, we’re going to be winning races this season. I promise you that.”
Next Up: General Tire 150 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway on Thurs. May 24 live on FS1.

Gus Dean; GREE Racing plan to be terrific at Toledo Speedway

TOLEDO, Ohio – On the heels of a productive open test at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway late last week, Gus Dean (@GusDean) and his Win-Tron Racing team are energized heading to Toledo Speedway, site of Sunday’s Menards 200 presented by Federated Car Care.

While the team’s 2018 season has been hampered with tough luck, the Bluffton, S.C.-native is upbeat about returning to the notable short track and earn his second top-10 finish of the season.

“I’m looking forward to some short track racing this weekend,” said Dean who sits eighth in the championship standings after four races. “Our No. 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolet has a lot of speed this year, but we haven’t been able to put an exclamation point on a weekend with a finish we felt like we deserved. Hopefully, Toledo brings that for us.”

The 23-year-old Dean says his team has brought him cars capable of winning, but a last-lap crash at Daytona, a faulty alternator at Nashville, a pit-road incident at Salem and running out of gas in the series’ most recent race at Talladega Superspeedway have hindered his Mooresville, N.C.-based team for showcasing their true potential.

“It’s kinda like going back to basics this weekend, head down, fin up,” Dean explained. “We have a good team. But there’s a lot of good teams in ARCA this season. No room for error. I’d like to think we’ve used our bad luck early in the season and the rest is going to fall into our hands.

“I’ve always liked Toledo. I have two top-10 finishes the last two years, but this weekend, we won’t settle for anything less than a top-five. My crew chief Jamie Jones is very devoted to our program and he’s been working on our car vigorously getting it ready.

“It’s the same car we had at Salem and it was wicked fast before the pit road issue. We got caught up in an accident coming back through the field too, but the guys have fixed the car and I think we’re all eager to get to Toledo and see what we can do.”

Toledo is the start of a nine-week stretch for the series which ends at Chicagoland Speedway in late June. The South Carolinian says it’s important for his team to make some noise over the next two months to carry into the summer stretch.

“We need to get to Victory Lane,” added Dean. “It’s tough because every team is coming to the race track really dialed in, ourselves included. I like our chances though. We have some good race tracks coming up for me and I know we’re going to have some fast 32 GREE Cooling Products | Baker Distributing Chevrolets to contend with.

“GREE, Tradewinds Climate Systems and Baker Distributing have put a lot of effort into our program and we want to reward them with a checkered flag.”

Kevin Cywinski, team principal of Win-Tron Racing says his team is not only ready for Toledo, but this quickly approaching nine-week run.

“We’re ready,” said Cywinski. “We’ve used the downtime to really focus on making sure our cars are the best that they can be. We’ve put total concentration and effort into the No. 32 GREE Racing team and I think our decision to put all our focus on Gus will pay off huge for us as we get into the summer months.

“As for Toledo, we learned a lot last year and Gus is warming up to the track. Jamie (Jones) feels confident about his setup for the race and I hope it transfers into a great result for our team and sponsors.”

In 31 career ARCA Racing Series starts, Dean captured his first career victory in his second ever start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway after starting a career-best second in Apr. 2016. Overall, Dean has eight top-five and 18 top-10 finishes.

The Menards 200 presented by Federated Car Care (200 laps | 100 miles) is the fifth of 20 races on the 2018 ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards schedule. Practice begins Sat., May 19 with an hour and half practice session from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. General Tire Pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 4:00 p.m. The race is set to take the green flag on Sun., May 20 shortly after 2:00 p.m. The event will be televised live on MAVTV, while ARCARacing.com will stream live timing and scoring throughout the entire weekend festivities. All times are local (Eastern).
